Urine diversion (UD) has been studied for decades as a way to enable distributed sanitation and to recycle nutrients onto land to fuel circular economies. No study to date has attempted a quantitative technical and economic analysis of the downstream effects of UD on sewage transport and treatment. This work used the SeweX model to reveal for the first time that through UD, hydrogen sulfide concentration in sewer headspaces can be reduced, and consequently sewer corrosion can be reduced. For a long rising main of 5 km, sewer headspace H2S can be reduced from 280 ppm to 200 ppm by diverting 75% of the urine. The same scenario enables the reduction of sewer corrosion from 12 to 10 mm/yr. Modeling sewage treatment plants with BioWin showed that sewage treatment responds to UD with a sharp reduction of the anoxic volume and a decrease of energy requirement by up to 50% at 75% UD. An upgrade of bioreactors to increase capacity by 20% can be completely avoided if 7% of the catchment's urine is diverted. Reductions in upgrade expenditure by up to 75% can provide the economic incentive for the uptake of UD.In this study, we developed a novel dual-analytical platform for the visual, sensitive, and reliable analysis of mercury ions (Hg2+) in environmental water samples. Importantly, thymine (T)-rich DNA probes were utilized to form T-Hg2+-T base pairs in the presence of Hg2+ to ensure the specificity of the method. We synthesized new luminescent tris(4,4'-dicarboxylicacid-2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II) dichloride (Ru(dcbpy)32+)-modified metal-polydopamine frameworks (MPFs@Ru), which were then applied to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system for the first time, and it achieved accurate and sensitive quantitative detection of Hg2+. To achieve rapid on-site determination, a multicolorimetric system based on a smartphone was established by inducing deposition of silver shells on gold nanorods (Au NRs). Under optimized conditions, the dual-modal assay showed an excellent response for Hg2+ in the linear range of 2 pmol L-1 to 500 nmol L-1, with a low detection limit of 0.32 pmol L-1. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrated satisfactory selectivity, stability, and acceptable reproducibility for the detection of Hg2+. The recovery of lake water samples ranged from 98.53% to 111.97% for the ECL method and from 95.04% to 106.11% for the colorimetric method, indicating the potential applicability of the proposed method for monitoring environmental water samples.Manganese (Mn) has the potential to reduce cadmium (Cd) uptake by rice; however, the efficiency depends on its soil availability. Therefore, this study designed a slow-release Mn fertilizer by employing a polyacrylate coating. Pot trials were conducted to study the effects of coated-Mn and uncoated-Mn alone or in combination with lime on the dynamics of soil dissolved-Mn and available Cd, and the transportation of Mn and Cd within rice. The results showed that coated-Mn declined the release of Mn until the 7th day of application; however, it consistently supplied more dissolved-Mn than uncoated-Mn. As a result, coated-Mn induced a greater Cd reduction (45.8%) in brown rice than uncoated-Mn (9.7%). The total Cd of rice and its proportion in brown rice were greatly reduced by coated-Mn, indicating the inhibition of root uptake and interior transport of Cd. Additionally, lime addition prominently increased the soil pH and decreased the CaCl2-extractable Cd (90.1-93.9%). However, since lime reduced the soil dissolved-Mn, downregulated the OsHMA3 expression and upregulated the OsNramp5 expression, brown rice Cd was reduced by only 43.0%. The combined addition of lime and coated-Mn alleviated the liming effect on soil Mn and gene expression in roots, thereby reducing brown rice Cd by 71.5%.A field study was designed to explore the impacts of foliar-applied chemically and green synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on cadmium (Cd) uptake in wheat plants. The wheat was grown in field which was contaminated with Cd and plants were subjected to foliar episodes of TiO2 NPs during plant growth period. Leaf extracts of two plant species (Trianthema portulacastrum, Chenopodium quinoa) were used for green synthesis while sol-gel method was used for chemical preparation of TiO2 NPs. Results showed that TiO2 NPs significantly enhanced the plant height, length of spikes photosynthesis, and straw and grain yield compared to control. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/linderalactone.html TiO2 NPs minimized the oxidative burst in leaves and improved the enzyme activities than control. Cadmium concentrations of straw, roots and grains decreased after TiO2 NPs treatments than control. The grain Cd contents were below recommended threshold (0.2 mg Cd /kg grain DW) for cereals upon NPs exposure. The health risk index by the dietary use of grains for adults was below threshold upon NPs exposure. Overall, foliar use of TiO2 NPs prepared from plant extracts was appropriate in minimizing Cd contents in wheat grains, thereby reducing risk of Cd to human health via food chain. Two configurations of TTTTA/TTTCA expansion in SAMD12 have been identified in familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy type 1 (FCMTE1). This study investigated the clinical and neurophysiological features of FCMTE1 and their association with TTTTA/TTTCA expansion patterns.
In total, 76 patients from 20 Chinese pedigrees were enrolled. Genetic (TTTTA/TTTCA configuration), clinical (e.g., onset, medication, prognosis, and anticipation) and neurophysiological examination (e.g., electroencephalogram and magnetoencephalography) data were evaluated, and associations between these parameters were analyzed.
All patients carried the TTTTA/TTTCA expansion mutation, 19 displayed the (TTTTA)exp(TTTCA)exp (type I) configuration and 1 displayed the (TTTTA)exp (TTTCA)exp(TTTTA)exp (type II) configuration. All patients manifested as progressive tremor, but symptoms of patients carrying type II expansion were more severe. The onset of tremor but not generalized tonic and clonic seizures displayed clinical anticipation between generations of 7 pedigrees, but the pedigree carrying the type II mutation did not show anticipation. Nanopore sequencing showed that the repeats expanded during maternal/offspring transmission (pedigree #7) but shrank during paternal/offspring transmission (pedigree #9). Magnetoencephalographic dipoles were localized in the right frontal lobe near the central sulcus in 4 patients carrying the type I mutation and on the left side in one patient carrying the type II mutation.
We confirmed the causative roles played by TTTTA/TTTCA repeat expansion in the SAMD12 gene in FCTME1. Both the length and the configuration of the repeats contribute to the clinical and neurophysiological characteristics of the disease.
